modern gun opens in 3wks for deer, which rifle do you think i should use? a Colt AR-15 w/ 20" barrel chambered for 5.56/.223 (have 10rd magazines to comply with local guidelines) 4x fixed red/green illuminated mil-dot / iron sight or Remington 700 Buckmaster chambered in 30.06 Leupold 3-9x mil-dot / no iron sights in the past i've used several different rifles in deer season, but all chambered for 30.06 as a side note, this would be the first time i've had either of the above in the field. both are new, but have had barrels broken in and both are easily capable of grouping within 1 moa on premium ammunition. reason i ask is that i was told the ar15 has no practical uses and apparantly if i were to shoot a deer with it, the deer would just be "shredded"

i've never used an ar15 but i LOVE my rem 700. I use the 7mm model but the .06 should be very comparable. I actually have a leopold 3-9x scope as well (although i have the traditional cross rather than the mini-dot).
anyway not much help here for a comparison. I've never touched an ar-15 and don't know anyone thats hunted with one but I can't come up with a single downside to the rem 700 (maybe less cool than useing the AR?)

the mil-dot just makes range estimation a bit easier and faster, which works out well for the land i hunt on.
the major problem i have with the ar is the small caliber, just kinda worry that i can't get a clean kill with it. i've read on the ar15 forums that it's been done, but i dont actually "know" those ppl.
anyway, the rem700 seems well built. (the ar might look cooler, but i think the 700 is more badass) ;D
